The Drake Neighborhood in Des Moines is one of the city’s oldest, biggest, and most diversified neighborhoods. It stretches from 42nd Street to Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway, and from Interstate 235 to Franklin Avenue. Beautiful boulevards, mature trees, established churches, and a variety of unusual turn-of-the-century residences may be found only minutes from downtown Des Moines. The Drake Neighborhood is a varied and historically significant area with a rich history. The area has a distinct and proud culture and history, which adds to a sense of solidarity, due to its unique location, history, and demographics. The Drake Neighborhood’s establishment of a common cultural identity, which includes current students, alumni, faculty, and residents, enables the mobilization of community volunteering initiatives. Locally owned coffee shops, barbeque and sushi restaurants, diners and cafés, hair salons, and specialized shops are all within walking distance. Home to Drake University, founded in 1881 and named after Civil War leader Francis Marion Drake, has a rich history and many traditions. Drake University is often regarded as one of the best colleges in the Midwest. A mid-sized, private university in Des Moines, Iowa, that combines the advantages of a bigger school with the benefits of small class numbers and tight personal interactions. The area is bustling with university students throughout the academic year (Go, Bulldogs!). The Drake area has plenty of entertainment alternatives owing to a regular stream of on-campus activities. The National Register of Historic Places-listed Sheslow Auditorium hosts a range of concerts throughout the year, including jazz, symphony, opera, musical theater, and chamber music. If athletics are more your thing, go see the Drake Bulldogs at The Knapp Center or Drake Stadium for track and field. Visit the University Book Store for textbooks, Drake Relays merchandise, video games, gym equipment, and more. Every spring, it hosts the Drake Relays, which attracts both tourists and alumni. It holds a weekly farmers market with farm-fresh vegetables, ready-to-eat cuisine, and live music during the summer. Every year, the Association’s Historic Homes Tour and our Greek Food Fair collaborate to offer history and wonderful food to the Drake region. In and surrounding DSM, the nearby Historic East Village and The Avenues commercial areas provide even more shopping choices. Dogs are welcome in the neighborhood. Many folks have dogs and walk them. It’s a welcoming neighborhood with plenty of shade and dog-friendly pathways. Drake is an extremely varied neighborhood. College students, young professionals, middle-aged professionals, and retirees are all represented.
